“I should be sorry if I only entertained them, I wished to make them better.”

So said George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), composer of perhaps the most famous of all Christian musical compositions-The Messiah, in reply to a compliment made to him on the Messiah’s entertainment success. As producer of this recording, it is also my wish that all who listen to it are made better; truly and eternally better. Songs of Deliverance is a recording of the biblical psalms that have changed the very hearts and lives of men, women , boys and girls for over two and a half thousand years.
The recording begins where we all must begin if we are to find deliverance and freedom from sin, (Ps.51). Confession and repentance will then lead us to that ultimate state of happiness, (Ps.32). We realise that this is the work of God and not of our own doing, (Ps.127). God is able to do such a work because He reigns and is exalted far aboveall other gods, (Ps.97), setting His glory above the heavens, (Ps.8). We can taste and see that the Lord is good, (Ps.34). Though there a times of lament and sorrow, yet we will sing to the Lord for His goodnes toward us, (Ps.13). Psalm 1 reminds us of that state from which we’ve been delivered, i.e. the counsel of the wicked and their ultimate destruction. Finally, Psalm 102 reminds us that because God reigns forever, generations yet to come can experience His deliverance.

Who is this God that delivers people from the slavery of their sin to the freedom of forgiveness? He is Jesus Christ, the one mediator between God and man. All who come to Him in repentance and faith shall not perish but have eternal life. All who come to him can truly sing Songs of Deliverance.

It is fitting that this recording opens with the words “Praise ye the Lord” and closes with the very same words, taken from Psalm 147. If, as the psalmist says, it is fitting to praise Him, then so we should, always and at all times. In between the opening and closing lines of this recording, we sing along with the psalmist, not only in times of joy and gladness (Ps. 122:1; Ps. 42:5), but also in times of anguish and disturbance of soul (Ps. 6:2, 3; Ps. 43:5). Let us therefore be reminded that no matter what state or situation we find ourselves in, we can and should, at the end of the day, echo the words of the psalmist: “Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him”.

I dedicated this recording to all churches that know the unique joy of singing unaccompanied psalms to the worship of Almighty God. May we continue to teach and admonish one another in this way.
